In May 2008, Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue signed into law an amendment into the Official Code of Georgia.
The amendment -- effective July 1, 2008 -- defines the establishment of a licensed Adult Day Health (ADH) facility that provides a comprehensive plan of services to meet the needs of Georgia's growing aging population. The plan of services must meet the guidelines for a medical model.
"Medical model" means a complement of basic social services, rehabilitative activities, health monitoring and intervention, and personal care. A medical model is committed to:
- Restore or maintain the ability to perform self care and other activities of daily living.
- Support the best possible quality of life.
- Prevent or delay the processes of decline associated with aging.
- Prevent or delay premature, inappropriate, undesirable, costly and often inhumane institutionalization.
